July – August 2009

What a difference a month or so makes. Bedroom #1 is starting to take shape as are the cisterns that make the foundation of the house and will fill with rainwater captured from the roof runoff. Andara has 3 cisterns for fresh water and one gray water cistern for irrigating the landscape plants. Most of the stone used to build the walls in the villa was excavated from the site. Fortunately the house is a downhill build so concrete was delivered by shoots from the road above. This kept the use of a cement pump truck (ka- ching) to a minimum.

The structure is basically concrete reinforced with steel rebar grid for floors and walls that are not stone. This is essentially a commercial building style.

How the materials actually got down to the site remains a mystery to me.

We get down to the site by rappelling. It was the going back up that was tough!

The cisterns are formed, plumbing and electrical conduit is run, steel rebar cages form the internal support of future columns, and ring beams that will form an integral part of the roof/house connection take shape. Steel, conduit and wood everywhere it’s quite the jigsaw puzzle.

We did manage to take some time out to visit the private beach in Dreeket’s Bay and enjoy a cold one.

Introduced ourselves to a few of the locals….

Look what we did to our beautiful green hillside – ouch. I hope it will be beautiful again some day.
